Differences between FUE and FUT hair transplants

What are the differences between FUE and FUT hair transplants?. So hair transplantation methods fall into two types. Starting with the FUT treatment, the name is otherwise known for Follicular Unit Transplantation. Now you’re probably reading this and wondering what this means?. Let me now elaborate. A strip of skin with hair is removed from the donor site and transferred to the bald recipient site. The other type is also known as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) or single hair transplantation. What happens here? The individual hairs with their follicles are taken from the donor site, processed in a solution (Nutrient) and then transplanted into the recipient area.

So what makes them different?

Both procedures start the same, the first thing is the scalp will be cleaned down then a small needle is used to numb the section the surgeon is working on. This is used with local anesthesia.

The FUE procedure involves harvesting individual follicles from the areas which have more hair. Then gently inserting the individual follicles where the hair loss has occurred. It is a fairly new procedure which is very popular.

The FUT procedure is more popular because of its reputation. It’s known as the strip method. It involves taking linear strips or groups of hair follicles from the back of the scalp or areas with an abundance of hair. The strips will then be carefully placed into circular incisions to the scalp areas which are affected by hair loss to replace the natural growth.

What are the benefits of FUE and FUT?

There are many benefits to these procedures which might get you thinking twice on which one to go for. Which one will cause a scar? What clinic should I go for? Which is all understandable, and it can be a life changing decision.

FUE does tend to have less scarring compared to FUT. This is down to the fact that when having the FUT procedure the linear strips hair follicles are removed from the back of the scalp and then placed in circular incisions at the front. These strips tend to leave small scars which can be visible if you have short hair. This procedure has a very high success rate.

FUE typically has less scarring due to the fact no incisions are made it is only small circular punches where the hair follicle is extracted and replaced in the affected areas. You would generally experience a quicker recovery time and less numbness of the scalp as it will be less traumatized. The procedure also has a high success rate.

Advantages of FUE

  • No linear scar is left behind. Tiny dots may be left behind; however, it will not be noticeable.
  • Shorter recovery time
  • Shorter hair is an option due to minimal scars

Advantages of FUT

  • Offers maximum fullness and therefore is a good option for patients requiring many grafts
  • Shorter time in surgery taking between four to twelve hours
  • Good prices available
  • Good for patients who want to keep long hair

How long do the procedures take?

The FUE should take around four to eight hours, but it all depends on the transplant size. The FUT procedure should retake about four to six hours. It depends on the number of grafts used.

You should start seeing changes within 3-6 months. It sounds like a long time right?. However it’s quick compared to a lifetime of baldness.

So which hair transplant is best for you?

The method carried out will depend on the situation of your hair. Our strategies aim to give you the full head of hair as well as your confidence back. That’s our main goal.

We have learnt that the FUE is known to be a gentler treatment however it doesn’t mean that this is the treatment for you and its best to be clear that each individual is different. This works for one and might not work for another. A full consultation would be needed to assess the situation of one’s hair.

What is the cost of these procedures?

FUT is usually a cheaper procedure, and FUE tends to be more expensive. So why is this?. It’s because the follicles will be removed separately, which overall makes the cost costlier. However it will all depend on the patients condition and goals.
