How long will a hair transplant last?

How long will a hair transplant last?. A hair transplant is a big step you have to think of everything, and whether the transplant will be worth it. So it’s understandable one may want to know if this is a permanent solution to your hair loss. At the Hair Dr we get asked often how long a transplant will last for and what should one expect? This post should put your mind to rest.

But first of all, we need to know what a transplant consists of. Hair transplantation methods falls into two types. Starting with the FUT treatment the name is otherwise known as Follicular Unit Transplantation. Now you’re probably reading this and are wondering what this means?. Let me now elaborate. A strip of skin with hair is removed from the donor site and transferred to the bald recipient site. The other type is also known as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) or single hair transplantation. What happens here? The individual hairs with their follicles are taken from the donor site, processed in a solution (Nutrient) and then transplanted into the recipient area.

So. How long does a hair transplant last?

A hair transplant can last a lifetime. When the hair transplant takes place, the hair follicles are harvested for the process and designed to keep growing. We do however, need to be attentive and put into consideration one’s age, hair type and lifestyle they live. The extent of hair loss can affect the lifespan of a hair transplant, and in some cases, one may need more than one hair transplant throughout their lifetime to achieve the desired result.

Will the hair transplant last a lifetime?

So you are deciding whether to go for the FUE or the FUT treatment, but you are wondering how long it will last and is it a permanent solution?

When a hair transplant takes place, grafts are taken from the head and is usually the part where the hair is known to keep growing. Even after implanted into the bald areas of the scalp. The transplanted hair follicles retain the characteristics of their origin and continue to grow for life. So with the right surgeon and the right aftercare is followed as provided, then there should be no reason why a hair transplant shouldn’t last a lifetime.

Always remember that each person is different and no treatment can guarantee a level of hair thickness and lifespan of a patient’s natural hair. So we know FUE and FUT hair transplants can provide a permanent solution for hair loss it’s also best to be clear one may need to undergo more than one procedure during there journey with the Hair Dr.

How would you know if more than one hair transplant is needed?

When planning and carrying out a very successful hair transplant, it can often be demanding because hair loss is an ongoing process. This means that transplanted hair may be permanent, but the patients original native hair may continue to thin.

It may be necessary for patients to have more than one hair transplant during one’s lifetime, but why is this? It may be to add volume or address a new area of baldness.

Rest assured a full examination will take place during the consultation process. You will be fully informed before committing to any treatment.

Can anything affect the finished result?

Even if the surgeon has an excellent reputation when delivering successful FUT and FUE hair transplants. Please be clear that everyone is unique and the finished result will depend on many factors.

  • The density of the donor area
  • Characteristics of the hair
  • The severity of the hair loss to start with
  • Donor follicular unit groupings
  • The contrast between hair and skin colour
  • Laxity of the patient’s skin
  • The size of one’s head

Rest assured all of this will be discussed during a consultation. However please be clear that transplants are not always for everyone and it’s very important to have a proper examination before undergoing any surgery at the hair clinic. We will always be honest and always realistic with you. We will only recommend the procedure if it’s 100% right for the patient.
